Our pool nets meet strict ASTM safety codes and are reliable and durable even in the most extreme conditions.

Can the DIY pool safety net be installed on any pool?
The Katchakid® DIY Kit is only sold for regular shaped pools of standard size. The maximum length of a DIY Katchakid is 40 feet. The DIY Katchakid requires knowledge of using a power drill and standard tools. Fitting a DIY Katchakid is a physical job and calls for some strength. A Pool Safety net uses horizontal tension across the pool so any decking or coping where anchors are to be placed must be sturdy, solid and in good repair.
How long will the installation take?
The installation will take you approximately 4-6 hours so only begin the installation process when you have plenty of time. As you are working with electricity you will also need to watch the weather reports to make sure you choose a day when rain is not forecasted.
What tools and equipment will I need?
  • Scissors
  • Hammer
  • Heavy Duty Hammer Drill *
  • 3/4” Concrete Drill Bit
  • Soldering Iron
  • Electrical Extension Cord with Ground Fault Interrupter
  • Clear PVC Glue for Roller Assembly
  • Tape Measure
  • Epoxy or Cement (maybe required for certain pool decking)
  • Water Pipe (if using a core drill)

*We recommend a heavy-duty hammer drill. For best possible results use a core drill with a diamond tipped drill bit. These drills can be rented on a daily basis from large hardware stores such as Home Depot. When using a core drill it is useful to use a wooden template to avoid the drill from sliding. A template can be produced from a 4”x4” piece of wood with a 3/4”in hole drilled through it. If using a core drill you will require a water pipe.

How is a pool net better than a solid cover?

Through our own research and parental feed back we have found that:

  • Solid swimming pool covers attract small children, they use it like a trampoline, even riding their bikes over it and parental feedback indicates that children have to be constantly removed from the center of pool covers.
  • An aging pool cover can become brittle posing an additional drowning risk of a breaking under a childs weight.
  • Solid covers can be become slippery when wet preventing a child from being able to get back off the water.
  • Solid pool covers can sag and hold puddles of rainwater - as a child can drown in just 5cm - 8cm of water this is also a far from ideal situation.
  • Solid pool covers obscure top to bottom visibility of the swimming pool so one cannot see what is underneath the cover.

How is a pool net better than a pool alarm?

Pool safety reasoning is keeping children out of the water. A child already in the water activates the swimming pool alarm. It can take 3 - 5 minutes for irreversible brain damage to occur and from as little as 30 seconds for death. We reccomend a pool alarm and a safety net, layers of prevention is best.

How is a pool net better than a pool fence?

In our opinion we feel that swimming pool safety fences are great pool protection method but humans are fallible, gates can be left open, pool furniture and garden equipment can be left near the pool fence providing a convenient ladder for a small child. If a child penetrates a pool safety fence the water is then totally exposed and an immediate threat.

Representatives from the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, US Public Health Service, Dept. of Health and Human Services, Atlanta, Georgia reported in a study of childhood drowning that 76% of all USA residential pools are adequately fenced.

The study suggests that if the proportion were increased by 100% most drownings of children under the age of 5 years would still not have been prevented. The study made the recommendation that additional strategies to prevent drowning other than pool fencing were needed. We reccomend a pool fence and a safety net, layers of prevention is best.

How long can I expect my Katchakid to last?

We would estimate that a when a Katchakid Pool/Pond net has been treated with a reasonable amount of care it will last an average of eight years.

How strong is the Katchakid?

The Katchakid pool nets are manufactured in durable High Density Polyethylene Braid 4mm in thickness. The ASTM bureau requires all nets and covers to support the weight of 485lbs and the Katchakid complies with this standard. The Katchakid is strong enough to support the weight of any adult.

What happens if my child falls or crawls onto the Katchakid?

The Katchakid serves as a barrier between the child and the water. As long as the net is in good condition, properly positioned and tensioned, the net will support the weight of a young child near the pool's edge. Katchakid's unique mesh size has a dual action: small enough to prevent a toddler's head from penetrating the net while simultaneously large enough to discourage movement. Most children will find the Katchakid uncomfortable and abrasive to move on, which will deter any further crawling on the net.

What if my child falls face down on the Katchakid?

This is obviously dependent of the age and weight of your child but  most children under 5 years will be kept off the water and out of danger. If a child over 5 years falls face down on the Katchakid they are usually capable enough to get straight back up and off of the net.

Can a child remove the Katchakid or crawl underneath it?

The Katchakid cannot be removed by most children under 12 years of age. If properly positioned, anchored and tensioned the net should not have any perimeter gaps for a child to crawl underneath.

How is the Katchakid secured to the pool?

The Katchakid is custom shaped during installation either by our expert technicians or by you during a Katchakid DIY fitting. The Katchakid is then attached by a small stainless steel component to patented brass or nylon fasteners, spaced at +/- 30" intervals around the pool. For further information and pictures go to Katchakid Fittings.

What is the central tensioning system?

Katchakid first pioneered and patented the initial Central Tensioning System (CTS) in 1988. The CTS today is a multifaceted system that uses a series of pulley's set in a circular fashion, which open and close to control the tension of the net.  The correct configuration and size of the CTS together with a necessary amount of pulleys determine a pool nets efficiency. The Katchakid uses an average of 12 to 16 pulleys per net.  Larger pools, those over 40ft., usually require 2 CTS systems allowing the Katchakid to be removed, replaced and tightened with relative ease.

How long does it take to remove and replace the Katchakid and is it difficult?

It generally takes 4 -5 minutes to remove the Katchakid and 8 -10 minutes to replace the net on an average swimming pool. Close to half of the Katchakid's regular users are female so we have developed our CTS system with this consideration.
Pond nets do not have the CTS as they are designed to be removed less frequently.
Will the Katchakid interfere with my pool cleaner?

No. When properly positioned, anchored and tensioned the Katchakid will not interfere with most standard pool cleaning equipment. Maintain the appropriate water level in your pool

Is the Katchakid affected by the sun and or pool chemicals?

No. The Katchakid pool netting is treated with laboratory developed maximum UV stabilized inhibitors. The Katchakid's U.S. made netting is far superior to the netting used by our competitors. Netting made in Mexico & China does not last as long. Katchakid netting will not shrink or deteriorate when subjected to harsh climatic conditions. Our material will not fade.

My pool has a complex shape with a negative edge can it be covered?
